GTA 6 wildlife, hunting and fishing

Leonida’s wildlife extends beyond the city streets. Animal study, hunting and fishing offer different reasons to explore; they should not be treated as interchangeable ways to complete the same objective.

Animals revealed so far

Game Informer’s developer coverage describes more than 170 animal species across land, water and sky. The named examples include flamingos, manatees, pelicans, alligators, green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats and rhesus macaques.

Some animals fall into Rare, Discoverable and Legendary categories. Their identities were not revealed in that coverage. The list above is a selection of announced species, not a complete animal checklist.

Studying animals

Animal study is a collection feature that also provides information about wildlife. It offers a way to engage with animals without hunting them.

How fishing works

Fishing uses catch and release: you cannot keep the fish. It is a leisure activity with associated challenges and collectibles. Do not plan around cooking or selling your catch using a Red Dead Redemption 2 guide.

How hunting works

Hunting provides a way to earn money and is introduced through a character who knows Jason. The interview does not supply a reliable unlock mission, payout table or complete hunting route.

Build a useful wildlife checklist

When exploring, keep the animal’s identity separate from the action you performed. Seeing an animal, studying it and completing a related challenge are different pieces of progress. Record the location and any conditions alongside the objective so that you can return without repeating an entire journey.

The future checklist will distinguish confirmed species from unverified sightings, and general encounters from specific objectives. A species total alone is not a list of requirements for 100% completion.

Start with the Leonida region overview for the setting. Exact encounter markers, time requirements and repeatable routes will be added when they can be checked in the game. Until then, avoid treating every landscape image as proof of an animal’s spawn point.
