GTA 5 The Jewel Store Job: Smart Approach Walkthrough

Characters: Michael and Franklin. Branch: Smart. Required setups: Bugstars Equipment and BZ Gas Grenades. The briefing takes place at Darnell Bros.

The Smart approach begins with Franklin dropping BZ gas into the store’s ventilation. Michael and the crew then collect the jewelry before escaping on motorcycles. This guide covers the roof, the 20 cabinets, the tunnel route and the truck section where Michael must protect Franklin.

Step-by-step walkthrough

  1. Drive Michael and Franklin to the construction entrance

After the briefing, get into Michael’s car and wait for Franklin. Drive to the marked building near Vangelico. This is the same roof access explored during Casing the Jewel Store. Follow the objective into the building under renovation rather than trying to enter the jewelry store early.

  2. Climb to the high roof and select BZ gas

Control switches to Franklin for the roof section. Use the stairs and ladders, cross the roof and climb to the raised vantage point overlooking the ventilation. Open the weapon wheel and select BZ gas from the throwable slot. Check its name before throwing: an ordinary grenade is not the required item.

  3. Land the canister inside the ventilation opening

Face the marked intake, aim carefully and make one controlled throw. Adjust the aim if the canister lands short or overshoots; do not throw the remaining supply in a rush. The target is the opening, not merely the roof beside it. A successful throw triggers the gas sequence and switches the action back to Michael.

  4. Collect the jewelry in a continuous circuit

Start with nearby unclaimed cabinets and move around the room in one direction, checking the inner displays before leaving. Watch which cases your crew has already cleared so that you do not waste time returning to empty ones. On versions with first-person view, try it for more direct positioning at each cabinet. Breaking the glass with controlled gunfire before using the pickup action can shorten the collection animation; keep your aim on the displays.

Quick Grab and Clean Sweep measure different things. Quick Grab requires the jewelry grab within 50 seconds; Clean Sweep requires all 20 cabinets to be emptied. The hacker’s alarm window does not extend the 50-second medal target. Watch the take, remaining cases and alarm warnings together, then leave promptly.

  5. Follow the motorcycles into the tunnels

Outside, control changes to Franklin on the getaway bike. Follow the crew through the streets and into the construction tunnel beneath the freeway. Brake before tight changes of direction and use Franklin’s driving ability when you need extra time to line up a turn. Stay with the riders instead of trying to lose the wanted level on your own. If Norm crashes and drops his loot, ride over the dropped bag if you can do so without losing the crew.

  6. Use Michael’s truck to protect the riders

At the Los Santos River, control switches to Michael in the getaway truck. Hit police cars threatening the bikes and push them away from the crew’s path. Aim your rams at the cruisers, leave the riders room to turn and watch for additional cars entering from side tunnels. The goal is to keep Franklin alive and clear the pursuit before the rendezvous.

  7. Load the motorcycles and reach the lockup

Stop at the marked meeting point after the pursuit is dealt with. Wait for the riders to load their motorcycles, then follow the route to the lockup. Park in the delivery area to complete the heist. The jewelry’s headline value is not an immediate cash deposit: Lester must arrange the sale and the job has deductions.

Gold medal checklist

  • Quick Grab: Complete the jewelry grab within 50 seconds. Plan a direct circuit and avoid revisiting empty cabinets.
  • Protégé Protected: Protect Franklin during the Los Santos River chase. Prioritize police cars closest to his motorcycle.
  • Clean Sweep: Clear all 20 glass cabinets. Check the cases the crew leaves behind; smashing glass without collecting the jewelry is not enough.

Crew choice and payout

For a low-cut Smart crew, Karim Denz, Packie McReary and Rickie Lukens are a strong combination. Packie must be unlocked through his random event; Gustavo Mota is a dependable alternative. A more expensive hacker gives you a longer alarm window, while Eddie Toh makes the motorcycle escape more forgiving.

A perfect collection can gross $4,946,153, but that is the whole job’s take. Madrazo’s $2.5 million payment and crew shares come out of it. Avoid treating the gross figure as Michael’s personal reward.

A practical gold-medal replay plan

The three medal objectives can be completed across mission replays. If one attempt leaves you short of both speed and cabinets, separate them: learn the full cabinet circuit on one run, then focus on speed on the next. Finish the mission so the completed objectives are recorded. A medal replay does not add another heist payout to your continuing save.

Common questions

Why is the gas throw failing?

Check that BZ gas is selected, you are on the raised vantage point and the canister is entering the marked intake. Landing on the adjacent flat roof does not count.

Can I switch to Loud during this finale?

The approach comes from the planning board. For a different permanent story choice, use a save from before that decision. Do not expect a replay to rewrite the crew and payout history in your current save.
